VIKTOR BARYAKHTAR DEAD: MEMBER OF NASU DIES AGED 90

On August 25, a well-known scientist in the field of physics of magnetic phenomena, statistical physics, solid state physics and nonlinear physics, organizer of science, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the USSR, Hero of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Viktor H. Baryahtar died.

Viktor Baryakhtar is a Ukrainian scientist in the field of theoretical physics of magnetic phenomena, solid-state physics, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences (1965), academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, honored worker of science and technology of the USSR (1980). Since 1990, V.G. Baryahtar has been the Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and since 1991 the First Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. From 1995 to 2015 he was the first director of the Institute of Magnetism of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and from 2015 - the honorary director of this Institute. He was the Hero of Ukraine.

The scientist took an active part in the work to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. He was the Chairman of the Nuclear Policy Committee under the President of Ukraine, a member of the International Coordinating Council of the European Community on Chernobyl Reduction, a member of the IAEA Chernobyl International Project Group, a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Ukrainian Government on Emergencies and a member of the Scientific Council. of the Technical Council of the Ministry of Chernobyl, Chairman of the Commission on Chernobyl of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Academician V.G. Baryakhtar is the author of more than 500 scientific works, including 16 monographs on physics and 5 monographs on the problems of liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe, co-author (together with A.I. Ahiezer and S.V. Peletminsky) of the discovery of "magnetoacoustic resonances in ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnets" (1956).

V.G. Baryakhtar gave the main courses of lectures at Karazin Kharkiv University, Donetsk University, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University and the National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI".

Farewell to V.G. Baryakhtar will take place on August 28, 2020 from 10:00 to 12:00 in the Great Conference Hall of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv, 55 Volodymyrska Street). Burial - in Baykovo cemetery.
